This creates a very broad definition of chronic illness that can include a plethora of diseases ranging in severity from cancer to asthma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Defining Disability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/disability.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC\u2019s definition of disability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is centered around the idea of \u201cimpairments, limitations, and restrictions.\u201d There are many types of disabilities, such as those that affect a person\u2019s:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remembering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many of these disabilities may be the direct result of chronic illness, they are not the same thing. In summary, a chronic illness can eventually lead to disability, however upon being first diagnosed with a chronic illness, this does not immediately mean you are or definitely will be disabled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Support Someone With a Chronic Illness<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People dealing with chronic illnesses can and do go about their lives extremely similarly to other people living without the diagnosis. Especially early on in their disease, people with these conditions still function autonomously and are typically able to perform their activities of daily living with little to no help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that reason, you don\u2019t immediately need to make any drastic changes in your loved ones\u2019 living situations if they\u2019ve been diagnosed with a chronic illness. Instead, you can usually provide basic emotional support and become a more regular part of their daily lives without needing to fully \u201ctake over.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Caregiving for Someone With a Disability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caregiving for a loved one with a disability is a much more hands-on process than helping someone deal with a chronic illness. If your loved one develops a disability, it\u2019s in their best interest for you or an outside service to assist them with their activities of daily living. To them, their decline from illness to disability has been much more gradual and they\u2019re less likely to acknowledge it on their own. This puts the responsibility on their loved ones to ensure that they\u2019re receiving proper attention and care while they navigate the course of their diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, supporting someone living with a chronic illness versus a disability comes down to an individual\u2019s specific case and how closely it\u2019s been monitored over time. If you\u2019re on top of your loved one\u2019s diagnosis and can see them functioning on their own, it\u2019s best to let them maintain as much independence as possible.
